Rebecca Mercuri didn't invent the voter-verified paper trail. Gray's patent from 1899 is clearly interested in the same idea, but by 2000, that was forgotten. So, it is fair to say that Mercuri re-discovered the idea and worked hard to popularize it. It's worth asking, though, how her idea stacks up. When I look at the illustration of a VVPT machine in her paper, just the bulk of it reminds me of the early Myers machines -- huge and impractical.
