I am an Professor of Instruction and a Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Iowa. Before comming to UI I was an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Mount Mercy University. I hold a PhD degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Iowa State University. I am also a Program Director of ExploreU STEM summer program for middle school girls and PI for NSF REU: Computing for Health a dn Well-being site. My research interests are in the area of Computer Education. During my graduate studies I was part of the Iowa State High Performance Computing Group and worked on projects supported by the United States Department of Defense, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Cray Inc. I earned earned several grants and awards, specifically the UI Collegiate Teaching Award, Emerity-Faculty Educator Award, NSF REU site grant, Transamerica Foundation STEM grants and the HPC Cluster and STEM Grants from Giacoletto Foundation. I am a finalist of 2015 Women of Innovation Award in Academic Innovation and Leadership category. I am an active member of Iowa Undergraduate Computer Science Consortium. I am heavily involved in STEM initiatives and am an advocate for First-Generation Students. I also organize and ran the workshops for STEM Open Mind, Open Doors Conference annually.
ExploreU ExploreU program is designed to help middle school students learn math and computer science skills while having fun. This program teaches important mathematical and computational ideas while helping students to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.
