The regular expressions over an alphabet _ comprise a collection of formal notations. There are strict rules for the formation of these notations, and each is understood to describe a

Since regular expressions have both a “syntax” (rules of formation), and a “semantics” (the associated language), we often speak of the (meta) language of regular expressions.
