We will provide a small hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ such that for
every $g>1$, there are infinitely many isotopy classes of separating
curves $r$ on $\partial M$ such that the manifold obtained by doing a
handle addition on $M$ along $r$ contains an essential closed surface
of genus $g$.
