The Second Annual High School Mathematics Tournament at the University of Iowa-Results
Saturday, March 7, 1998

The Second Annual High School Mathematics Tournament at the University of Iowa was held on Saturday, March 7, 1998 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.. Sponsored by the Division of Mathematical Sciences, and with the generous support of Dean Gary Fethke and Professor Carol Fethke, this event brought together a total of 106 students from the following schools (listed alphabetically by city name):
1.   Cedar Falls High School, Cedar Falls
2.   Cedar Rapids-Marion Home School, Cedar Rapids
3.   East High School, Des Moines
4.   Roosevelt High School, Des Moines
5.   Walhert High School, Dubuque
6.   Central High School, Elkader,
7.   City High School, Iowa City
8.   West High School, Iowa City
9.   Linn-Mar High School, Marion
10.  Waverly Shell Rock High School  Waverly Shell Rock
11.  West Branch High School, West Banch
12.  West Liberty High School, West Liberty.
The students participated in a total of four "events".  In two of these events (the "Sprint Round" and the "Target Round"), students answered mathematics test questions on individual tests.  In the remaining two events (the "Team Round" and the "Rely Round") students worked in teams. These test events were proctored by myself and a total of fifteen undergraduate and graduate students from the Division of Mathematical Sciences. Many thanks to Terry Sargent and Shayne Gelo for making sure we had enough proctors and organizing the subsequent lunch for proctors.  Sometimes proctoring involved collecting and passing out questions and answers during the exam itself.  While these exams were going on, a team of Mathematics teachers  from a number of the participating schools and Michelle Larson, Actuarial Science Coordinator for the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science worked on grading the completed exams.
The graded results were  entered into a computer and sorted into a large number of categories (four events, grades  ninth through twelve, large or small school, with a 700 cut-off size for small school classification, and overall school winners) by Brad Glass, a Mathematics Education graduate student and Vickie Clarke, a secretary from the Department of Mathematics.  Using a program developed by Brad, he and Vickie worked non-stop (not even a break for lunch!) to get the data compiled and award certificates completed by the scheduled 2 p.m. awards ceremony.
At the awards ceremony  Jon Simon, Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Mathematics Undergraduate Committee gave a short speech on the importance to the students' futures of their continued study of  Mathematics and their participation in tournaments like this.  I hope it is clear from the above that this tournament would not have been possible without the assistance and cooperation of a large number of people.  In this regard I also want to mention the following people:
Professor Paul Muhly of the Department of Mathematics who organized last year's tournament
Mr. Mike Marcketti, Mathematics teacher from West High School, Iowa City, who worked on last year's tournament and had lots of detailed information about how the tournament ran and should run this year,
Sandy Stockman, Administrative Assistant to  the Department of Mathematics with whom I worked closely in coordinating the participants, helpers, logistics and all other details of the tournament. Without all these people's help, the tournament could  not have run a smoothly as it did.
Here is a summary of the results of the tournament.

There are more detailed results are available (e.g. actual scores of the schools in the various events).  Although these do not affect the awards already given out , the following errors in the original scoring should be noted for the record:
for Iowa City High School in the relay round event, the grade 11/12 team 1 scored 12.5 points and team 2 scored 25 points
for Central High School Elkader in the relay round event, the grade 11/12 team 2 scored 25 points.
Thanks to everyone who shared in the work of making this tournament run efficiently, and thanks most of all to the over one hundred students who undertook the nontrivial effort at solving almost three hours of mathematics problems on a Saturday morning.
