There are many research studies at the University of Iowa that need volunteers. Below are some requests for volunteers that may interest you.



RE: [Research]Healthy adults are invited for a non-invasive brain stimulation study   (received Jan. 25, 2021)

The Integrative Neurophysiology Laboratory in the Department of Health and Human Physiology at The University of Iowa, invites young adults 18-30 years old to participate in a non-invasive brain stimulation study to investigate the effects of personal protective equipment (PPE) and stimulation on leg muscle fatigue.

Who can be part of this study? Young adults who:

Are between the ages of 18-30 years
Right-side dominant
Are able to walk for 6 minutes
Currently undertake at least 30 min of moderate intensity, physical activity (at least 3 days per week) for at least the last 3 months
Are without chronic neurological, psychiatric, or medical conditions
Are not taking any psychoactive medications
Have not previously tested positive for COVID-19
Are able to attend four, one-hour visits spaced roughly one week apart
Participants in this study will be paid $25 for their time and effort.

RE: [Research] Cognitive Neurology Lab   (received Jan. 21, 2021)

The Cognitive Neurology Laboratory in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Iowa, directed by Assistant Professor Jan R. Wessel, Ph.D., is looking for participants in an ongoing research study on cognitive flexibility.

- Are you between the ages of 18 and 30 years old?
- Do you have normal (or corrected-to-normal) vision and hearing?
- Do you have no history of neurological or psychiatric disorders?

If so, you are eligible to participate! Our study involves performing simple tasks in which you press buttons in response to visual stimuli and / or sounds. Furthermore, we will record your brain activity using an electrode cap that measures your electroencephalogram (EEG). We may also do a heart rate recording using ECG. The studies will be performed on the campus of the University of Iowa Health Care and Hospitals, in the Roy Carver Pavilion.

The studies take between 1 and 3 hours, and we will pay you an hourly rate of $15 for your participation.

RE: [Research] Participants Invited for Simulator Driving Study   (received Jan. 21, 2021)
The National Advanced Driving Simulator at The University of Iowa Research Park is inviting adults to participate in a driving simulation evaluating procedures designed to detect drowsy driving.

Who can be part of this study?

Males ages 21-30
Live within 30-minute drive of University of Iowa Research Park
Have normal sleep patterns
Have not participated in any driving simulation studies regarding drowsiness and driving conducted at the National Advanced Driving Simulator
Able to participate in:
One phone call that also requires access to an internet connection on a personal device (phone, tablet, laptop, desktop) lasting about 30 minutes
One overnight study visit of up to 9 hours (beginning at 11pm) with no sleep beginning at 8am and no caffeine beginning at 1pm
Able to refrain from sleep beginning at 8am until the study visit (no napping is permitted)
Willing to complete an activity log beginning the day prior to your overnight visit.

The National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) at The University of Iowa Research Park invites adults to participate in a study looking at the effects of cannabis use on driving performance. RE: [Research] Research opportunity for individuals with normal hearing   (received January 11, 2021)
Individuals between the ages of 18-45 years who are native English speakers are invited to participate in a research study. Researchers at the Hearing aid and Aging Research laboratory are using facial expressions to study the emotional responses of normal hearing individuals under different experimental conditions. Participants will listen to and repeat sentences presented while a camera records their facial movements.

To qualify, you must:

Have normal hearing sensitivity (we can test this)
Not be diagnosed with or under medication for psychiatric or psychological disorders.
Not be under medication or use any mood-altering drugs for medicinal or recreational uses.
Not at present or in the past have experienced facial weakness or paralysis.
Have a laptop with a reliable internet connection for video-conferencing for a remote experimental session.
Not have hairstyles that cover the face (e.g. bangs)
Not have facial hair (beard, mustache) on the day of testing.


Since the study involves recording of facial movements, you will be asked to take off your mask during the period of testing. The researcher will wear a mask at all times. Participation involves 1-2 visits (of around 2 hours each) to the laboratory and 1 remote visit using Zoom.

Compensation will be provided for all 3 visits.

All visits will be conducted in at 317, SHC at the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center: 250, Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, IA- 52242.

RE: [Research] Communication and Memory Laboratory   (received March 22, 2016)

The Communication and Memory Laboratory at the University of Iowa is looking for participants for a research study. Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires, paper and pencil and computer tasks, and perform language tasks (e.g., follow commands, tell and listen to stories, interact with another person).

To be eligible, participants must:
* be 21-26 years old
* have a bachelor's degree
* have no significant psychological or neurological history (e.g., no history of stroke, loss of consciousness, neurological disease, depression)

RE: [Research] Study Investigating the Influence of Increased Sympathetic Tone on Vasodilation in the Leg of Adults   (received March 11, 2016)

Research Study to Investigate the Influence of Sympathetic Nervous System Activity on Muscle Contraction-Induced Vasodilation in the Leg of Young and Older Adults. Non-smoking, men and women without a history of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and Raynaud's Syndrome between the ages of 18-35 years and 60-85 years are invited to participate in a research study that will investigate the influence of increased nervous system activity on vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) elicited with a muscle contraction in young and older adults. Participation will involve: non-invasive measurement of blood flow in the leg, knee extension exercise, and insertion of the foot into ice water.

Participation involves two visits to the Human Integrative and Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory (first visit-1 hour, second visit-2.5) located on the Health Sciences Campus (Medical Education Building).

Participants will be compensated.

We are recruiting healthy female adults between the ages of 18 and 70 to participate in a research study that investigates the role of activity in healthy women. Volunteers must not currently have pain. Compensation provided.

If you are between the ages of 21 and 40, or 60 and 80, and English is your native language, you are invited to participate in a research study about how language changes with age, and how these changes affect perceptions of the speaker. The study will involve 1 visit to the Wendell Johnson Speech & Hearing Center, lasting about 1 hour. Compensation will be available.

RE: [Research] A Reference Database of Adult Speakers for Research in Motor Speech Disorders   (received Feb. 13, 2012)

Do you have typical speech and language?

Could you arrange to complete some simple speaking tasks that take about 1.5 hours?

If you answered YES to both questions we invite you to participate in a research study.

We recently received funding to investigate the speech patterns of typically-speaking adults. We are now enrolling persons ages 20 - 80 years with no history of speech and/or language difficulties. The one-time session will be held at the University of Iowa's Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center. You will participate in a variety of speech tasks that take approximately 1.5 hours to complete and you will be compensated for your time.

Individuals ages 1-17 with normal hearing are invited to participate in a research study examining high-frequency hearing. Study involves six 1-hour visits to the laboratory, spaced at 1-week intervals, with one additional 1-hour visit to be scheduled at a later date. Compensation provided. Who can be part of this study?

* Drive at least 10,000 miles a year
* Have not participated in any distraction related or new in-vehicle technology studies at the National Advanced Driving Simulator

RE: [Research] Research Study on the Treatment of Influenza   (received Jan. 19, 2012)

The University of Iowa is conducting a research study on treating Influenza. This research will evaluate the effectiveness of Tamilflu, a drug used to treat Influenza, versus a placebo. Individuals who are experiencing influenza like symptoms, such as a fever, headache, runny nose, cough, body aches and fatigue are invited to participate in this study. Symptoms must have started less than 48 hours ago. Compensation is available.

The University of Iowa Department of Internal Medicine is conducting a research study on genetic variation in corneal sensitivity.

VOLUNTEERS aged 18 to 80 who do not wear contact lenses, have not had corneal surgery in the last year, are not pregnant or breast feeding, do not have COPD lung disease, diabetes, or active allergic rhinitis are invited to participate in a study to test eye sensitivity to carbon dioxide.
