A complicated unknot (pdf file) that is an elaboration of an example suggested by M. Freedman. Wu's program MING succeeds in untangling this, as does Evolver. By combining Umd-energy minimizing flow with shrinking and eliminating edges, Wu has produced examples of tangled, but unknotted, polygons that appear to be local minima for Umd.
