• A vi tutorial -- Help with the vi editor for beginners.
• A Unix tutorial -- Help with Unix/Linux for beginners.

• A manual of Style for C Programmers -- This has some useful hints about applying decent software engineering methodology in a language that, at first blush, appears to offer little support for such methodology.

• shell.c -- a rudimentary Unix shell
• User Level Threads -- a thread manager that can be incorporated into C (or C++) programs.

• System Software Research is Irrelevant -- a pesimistic view of the field.

• Plan 9 -- a distributed and largely UNIX compatable programming environment developed at Bell Labs. The man pages are a useful resource.

• Timeline of Unix, Linux and variant history A cursory overview of the history
• The History of the Unix Operating System in some depth, with a Bell Labs bias.
• Dennis M. Ritchie's history of Unix

• Ubuntu Linux for the IBM PC and compatibles (free software, a good way to use an old Windows 98 machine).
• Yellow Dog Linux for the Sony PS3 (free software, if you have a keyboard, mouse and the right video cable).
