"Using Life Data to Assess the Risk of Product Failure"

William Q. Meeker,  Department of Statistics,   Iowa State University

Unanticipated failure modes are the primary cause of serious product reliability failures. After such a failure mode is discovered for a product that is already in the field, an immediate question that management needs to answer is "what is the financial risk of failures of product already in the field?" Risks can involve costs ranging from excessive warranty returns to loss of human life. Limited failure data, often with complications, perhaps supplemented by engineering information, are generally used to make the needed assessment. In this talk, I will discuss some well-known and some not-so-well-known examples of unanticipated failure modes and the risks involved. I will then outline some details of the statistical methods of life data analysis that were used to assess risk for one particular product.

Coffee and cookies will be provided.

Travel Directions

From I-80:   Take exit 182 north three miles on Highway 146. Turn east (right) on Sixth Avenue (Highway 6).  Proceed three blocks to the corner of Sixth Avenue and Park St., which is the southwest corner of campus. Continue along Sixth Avenue, around the south end of campus, across the railroad tracks to East St.  Turn left onto East St. The first available right hand turn will put you into a parking lot directly across the street from a long series of connected dorms that run along East St. This lot will say that it is restricted to either Faculty-Staff or Students, but you should park there anyway; Campus Security has assured us that they will not ticket cars. Cross the street, enter dorm loggia, and ask directions to the Science Building. You can find a campus map at: http://webserver.grinnell.edu/aboutinfo/map/.   The Science Building is labeled EH on that map. Signs in the Science Building will direct you to Room 1023.

Those coming from Ames will probably take U.S. 30 to Route 146, south to Grinnell.  Find Route 6 and continue as above.

Those coming from the Cedar Falls area on Route 63, will turn right at Route 6, drive about 10 miles into Grinnell from the east. Several blocks after entering town you will see East St. Turn right and find the parking lot immediately on your right.
