1st assignment, due Thursday, September 3:

Exercises 1.4.2, 1.43, 1.5.2, 2.1.3, 2.1.6, 2.1.10. Please see the remarks on the syllabus about the standard of explanation expected on the homework.

2nd assignment, due Thursday, September 10:

Exercises 2.1.12, 2.1.13, 2.1.14, 2.2.4, 2.2.5, 2.2.6, 2.2.9.

3rd assignment, due Tuesday, September 21:

Exercises 2.3.4, 2.3.7, 2.3.8, 2.3.11, 2.4.1, 2.4.3, 2.4.4, 2.4.8.

4th Assignment, due Thursday, October 1:

Exercises, all in section 3.1: 5, 7-12.

5th Assignment, due Tuesday, October 13:

Section 3.1: Exercises 13, 14, 17. Section 3.2, Exercises 2 (Note errata!), 5, 6, 7, 11, 12.

6th Assignment, due Tuesday, October 20:

Please note: We have collectively been getting quite sloppy about handing in/collecting assignments on time. Let us please agree that the assignments are really due when they are due (although the due date may be renegotiated for the entire class.)

Final Assignment, due Tuesday, December 8.

Suggestions for additional study/practice:

A similar course currently being given at University of Pennsylvania by Eugene Stern has a very similar point of view. (The textbook is Artin.) Here is a link to Eugene Stern's course page with exercise assignments.


Exams:

There will be one or two midterm exams, dates to be negotiated; the dates will appear here when they are known. There will be a comprehensive final exam. The text of the exams will appear here after the exams have been done by all students.
