Abstract:
Gigabytes and teraflops are necessary but not sufficient to
achieve the goals established by the Strategic Implementation Plan:
America in the Age of Information
issued by the Committee on Information and Communications R&. We
believe that the most promising direction for near term progress is
in improving control over the computing power of the high performance
computer systems. Our paper identifies what we regard as
the most important challenges and goals in this area and defines the
activities and efforts that we see as most important for progress.
