Syllabus Addendum

MATH:6000:0001 - Introduction to Algebra I, Fall 2018

This is an addendum to the original syllabus for MATH:6000:0001, Fall 2018 with respect to homework.

Homework:

• Homework problems will be posted on the course web page under Lecture Schedule and Homework.

• Homework is due at the beginning of every third lecture, starting with the fourth lecture of the semester.

• Please hand in your homework on time (either physically or by email). Make sure it is legible. The higher the contrast, the better. If you hand in your homework physically, I will copy it and give the original back to you. In this case, please make sure your homework copies well.

• I will assign a percentage to each homework assignment according to the percentage of the problems you have worked successfully.

• After 2 homework assignments have been turned in, in the next lecture, 4 students will each work one problem from the past 2 homework assignments on the board. You will have to be prepared to work ANY of these homework problems on the board. You can use a one-sided letter-sized page with handwritten notes to remind you of the main ideas or issues.

• I will grade each student working on the board on
  1. presentation,
  2. completeness of arguments, and
  3. responsiveness to questions.
  In other words, in addition to the percentage for each homework, you will also obtain a score for working a homework problem on the board.

• ! If a student at the board gets stuck, there will be no disparaging comments from any other student !
  The goal is to have everyone understand the subject matter covered by the homework. Sometimes people will not have been able to solve a homework problem completely. In the course of discussing the homework, the goal is that all students will arrive at a strategy of how to solve each problem that is discussed.

• Here is the schedule for Fall 2018:
  • HW1: due Th 08/30 at the beginning of the lecture

  • HW2: due Tu 09/11 at the beginning of the lecture

  • Discussion of HW1-2: during the lecture on Th 09/13
    (see ICON for the students who are at the board)

  • HW3: due Th 09/20 at the beginning of the lecture

  • HW4: due Tu 10/02 at the beginning of the lecture

  • Discussion of HW3-4: during the lecture on Th 10/04
    (see ICON for the students who are at the board)

  • MIDTERM: due Th 10/18 at the beginning of the lecture

  • HW5: due Th 11/01 at the beginning of the lecture

  • HW6: due Tu 11/13 at the beginning of the lecture

  • Discussion of HW5-6: during the lecture on Th 11/15
    (see ICON for the studens who are at the board)

  • FINAL EXAM: due Mo 12/10 by 11AM

  If you have a good reason for switching the date of your working a problem on the board with another student, please let me know. If you have any concerns, please also let me know.
