Booting the Computer to use the Virtual PC and your Zip Disk
All of the work we do in this course will be done using the Virtual PC
software installed on the Macs in the Information Arcade. Here's
what you need to do to ensure that the computer will work properly for
you:
-
Restart the Computer
-
If the computer is in "PC/Win98" mode, you will need to go to the Start
menu and select Shutdown. Once Windows 98 shuts down, you will then need to restart the Macintosh. Refer to the next item.
-
If the computer is in Mac mode, you will need to go to the Special menu
and select Restart.
-
As soon as the computer starts to reboot, place your PC/Win98 Formatted
Zip disk in the Zip drive.
-
Wait for the computer to boot up.
-
At some point you will need to log in to the computer network. Refer to the section on Logging In below.
-
At another point you will have the opportunity to either run the MacOS,
or Windows 98. You will need to select Windows 98 to run the Virtual
PC software.
Logging In
At a couple moments in the boot-up process, you will need to supply a user
id and password to access the Information Arcade network for our class.
When you see the Novell Network Client login screen, you should enter the following
information:
User ID: 22C005
Password: sb2000
When you see the blue and grey Windows 98 network windows pop-up, simply click the Cancel button. You should see two of these.
Accessing the Class Software
Finally, once the machine has booted and you have successfully logged in,
you will be able to access the class directory on the Information Arcade
server.
The software used in this class is installed in a folder on the "L:" drive. This drive is also called "Meteor\Data". To get to this drive, double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. A window will pop-up that lists the drives accessible by this computer. Locate the "L:" or "Meteor/Data" drive and double-click on it.
You should then see a folder labeled "22C-005". All the class software is installed in this folder.
Accessing Your Zip Disk
When you first start the Virtual PC program, you need to tell it where
your Zip disk is located and then tell it to share that Zip disk with the
MacOS. You only need to do this once and then you will be able to
access your Zip disk as a normal drive (e.g. A:, C:, S:, etc...) in the
Windows 98 software.
-
Hold down the Apple Key
-
At the bottom of the screen you should then see a small set of buttons. One of them is labeled "Folders". While continuing to hold the Apple Key down, click on the Folders button.
-
You will then be prompted to select the disk you want to share. Click on the Desktop button and then look for your Zip disk in the list of drives. Select your Zip disk and click the 'Share "NAME OF YOUR ZIP DISK HERE"' button.
-
You will next see a "PC Preferences" window and in a small box on the upper right of that window you will see the list of drives you are sharing. Take note of the letter associated with your Zip disk. This is the drive letter that will represent your Zip disk in the Windows 98 Virtual PC software.

Click Ok.
